'He still loves me ...'
Mother of 4 says she's winner's wife
Nynna Ionson is living in poverty, making do without a television or a telephone and hitchhiking in the dead of winter, and did not know until Thursday that the man she says is her husband had a lottery ticket worth $30 million. The Woodstock mother of four said yesterday she was kept in the dark by lottery winner Raymond Sobeski until he finally turned in his ticket.
"I know he loves me and I love him. It's what's in your heart -- nothing else matters," she said. "Thirty million dollars and me. Why wouldn't you want to have both?"
'PEOPLE GET GREEDY'
Ionson isn't entitled to any of the $30-million lottery jackpot he won, his brother Larry Sobeski said.
"I'm sure he was going to look after (her). People get greedy," Larry said.
Raymond did marry Ionson in 1998, and realized it was a mistake the next day, Larry said.
Ionson maintains she and Sobeski are still married, but the lottery winner's brother said that's not the case.
"He married her but ... he never moved in with her," Larry said.
"He was legally separated (from Ionson) when he bought that ticket."
Yesterday, Ionson's teenage son Cory and a longtime neighbour confirmed she had been in contact with a lawyer.
"I have known the guy for nine years and I don't like him much. Why be so greedy and do this (cash in his winning ticket) on April Fool's Day. It's unbelievable," Cory said.
Larry says media reports that his brother missed child- support payments to his former wife Sherry Sobeski and two kids are "false and disgusting."
UP TO DATE
"He was up to date on his child support. When somebody gets a lot of money, everyone wants to get some," Larry said.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. investigates and deducts any spousal or child payments that the lottery winner may owe, spokesman Kathy Pittman said. "The jackpot was $30 million and (Sobeski) received $30 million," Pittman said.
Larry says Raymond is out of the country and the rest of his family is in hiding because the media attention has been overwhelming.
