Not April fools ... it's confirmed

Raymond Sobeski, self employed computer repair guy from Princeton On ... most eligible batch in Canada now took a year to decide what to do with the $$ ... saw it on CBC

Also, there was a couple in the USA who claimed their $239M JP today ... a retired truck driver and wife settled for $140M lump sum

He said that he did not want to do anything rash, but you can't get any more rash by risking $30 million for a whole year. If something had happened to him, he would never have enjoyed his millions or he would have been unable to present the ticket in time. Nobody including his parents knew that he had the winning ticket.

Even if he didn't want to spend a single cent for a year, he could have parked that $30 million in a 3.33% 1-year certificate last April and earned an extra $1 million. He could then spend that extra million very rashly now or add it to his selected charities.

I wouldn't be suprised if there were other reasons for waiting so long. Maybe he was involved with somebody or something that he had to get rid of first before coming forward.

Lottery Tip: if you ever win the jackpot, claim the money on the very first day and put it in the bank or a T-Bill. You can then take all the time you want in deciding what to do, but at least your money is earning interest.

Sure, I agree. To someone who doesn't have a pot to spit in (like me) the interest is unimaginable to waste. However he still has the 30 huge , that's a lot of play money if he's so inclined. My guess is once someone knows that kind of mula is coming their 'logic' takes a different twist.

And you're also right that what he tells the media is probably not the whole story, we can only speculate at best.

The money is not 'lost' however, unless the Pot just sits on the counter waiting to be picked up (which is highly unlikely). I wonder what happens to the interest that's generated while the pot is in Lotto Corps coffers? Do they put it back into play?

This guy would have been up a creek if something happened to him in the interim, accident, hospital, dead. Whatever! And he wasn't able to cash in that ticket.
I read in the paper this morning, he checked his ticket about 200 times. I know there are things you should do first with a win of that magnitude, but, I doubt I'd have waited almost a year to cash in.

Lady Luck was smiling on him, that's for sure. :agree:
I saw the ticket on the news - he had a bunch of other tickets with 2 or 3 hits and the winner was right in the middle - completely circled with one circle

I can understand doing some prep for that but a year?

As you said, I wonder if he realized if something happened to him the $$ would go poof :scatter: - unless someone found that ticket.

May be he passed a year looking for a new jackpot... "why to go and bring the money twice if I can make it just once?"
Lucky and Lazy

The pleasure of winning, no matter what game you play, only comes if and when you get the prize, whatever it can be. Instead of that, this player wasted some adrenaline checking 200 times his ticket; I wonder how has he lived emotionally last year!?
Such a stress, I think :unhappy: ? :dizzy: ? ?
Anyway, we are worse than him ... we worked a lot last year and look what we got ... some   :wavey:

He checked 200 times over the course of the year. He must be an awfully disciplined type of person. I can't imagine working for a whole extra year when I didn't have to. That would stress me out. :) I don't have that kind of discipline.

Sometimes I wonder which is worse - waiting for the win or getting the win

I don't really know how long I'd wait, but I don't think it would be longer than a month. I would hope that would be enough time to plan things out. :)

How long do you think you would wait to cash that ticket in?

As a good worker must do (work and go to get the money), I'd be next Monday in Lisbon to get such money, Maggie.

Although, knowing that would happen only if Lady Luck Looked at my tickets, the efforts I use to fill them and the hope I put on them deserve such promenade
