What happened yesterday?

Beaker:

You collected this one:
Guest Quoting Post in Thread 6/49 Discussion For April 21, 2004 04:22 PM.

As you can see, there is nothing from a Guest in that thread. Logic tells me the Guest clicked Quote, was then stopped followed by a message saying you need to be a member. Does this make sense?

Regards,
George:)
George,
you can't see posts as guests, therefore can't click the 'quote' button within the post

Try it for yourself - can't do it

Good to be back. A huge number of sites were subjected to DOS (Denial Of Service) attacks yesterday and today.

As far as protecting this site from further intrusions, perhaps this could be of help (specifically, point #3).
Those are all good points shirazbai :agree:

I'm certain LT is on this one for sure :agree2:

Here is some more for LT and also to share with you guys.

From my experiences with passwords in the business world, trivial passwords are the leakest link. There are definate rules I'd insist on to prevent discovery. Beyond that, some software or the operating system responsible for granting access should notice an attack and take appropriate action.

It is very interesting to note LT was locked out... ...was it just LT or everyone? We had a restore done so we will never know the whole story on that one:notme:.

I'm not sure why... ...the biggest question is how come you catpured activity showing a Guest doing what we think is not possible:notme:.

I wondered about the 'Quote' thingy too

a guest can click view ... but won't get too far cuz the 'you must be a member' page will pop up then. I think that is why 'Who's online' feature does sometimes show the guests as viewing when we know they can't.

There's only one way to read posts without becoming a member, that's by linking to Archives. Can't post nor anything else, but can read all threads, which maybe a day or so behind sometimes.

PS. my 2 posts shoulda been 1 ...

That explains everything... ...I never bothered to figure out how they are doing it. I knew there has to be a way since we see evidence constantly. I got better things to do than buggering around like that anyway. They can't post unless they register as a member so "who cares".

George:)

My sentiments exactly.

One other small point: some probably register but unless they acknowledge the resulting email to confirm their pass-word (activate) they will only be able to read. Although they will display as members on logon they can't participate ... that may account for some (many?) lurkers.

I imagine some even use a fake e-mail for registration hence they never receive the confirmation.

Cheers

I did a little test.

These bots seem to 'monitor' where members go.

I opened a window on a random page 'Beakers Lottery Web Site' in 'Anything Goes'

Not too long later this is what I saw.

Guest Viewing Thread Beaker's Lottery Web Site 01:09 PM

Evil bots

This is a little :worry:

If someone had your password to log on, and say they were on the board, and you went to log on, would you be locked out? Would you get some type of msg?

Actually, this happened on this board. A password was hacked and the person posted some extremely rude messages to me and other members here.

Not sure if you could post if someone else had your password and logged in from a different machine.

Bottom line - make sure your password is industrial strength - selections from all 5 areas - and change it the odd time.:agree:
