This issue is a can of worms. Browsers and software like this forum are poorly written these days... ...lots of problems... ...the good old days when you could really depend on things done right are in the past:crap::bawl:.

Regards,
George:)

You are forgiven and I hope LT is able to do something about this but, I don't think the chances are very good... ...there is always hope.

George,

Do you regulary use two different browsers or access this forum from two different sites?

If you do that's explains it!
I now recall that I had the same problem, and I solved it by only keeping one logged session!

BTW: take a look at Mozilla Firefox, it is a pretty good browser. Filled with nice features....

Hi,

When you click View New Posts and have looked at what you want, is it safe to use the Mark Forums Read that is at the bottom of the View New Posts sheet ?.

Regards
PAB

Thanks George for bringing up this topic and everyone else for your input as it is important and it also relates to other "cookie" issues as well.

First let me say that "mark all forums read" or "view new posts" or "login" etc are all USER specific. No one can mark all forums read for someone else.

The whole system here runs on cookies and has security features to prevent silly people from disrupting the board or accessing the membership database for purposes of theft.

90% of the email that I get (that I do not have the resources to respond to) is related to cookies issues. ie "I'm a member but I can't login" etc. is usually related to cookies or they didn't confirm their membership via the email response required or the email with their login info bounced back here because they did not delete all of the spam in their email box and there account was full.

Specfically re the "mark all forums read" or "view new posts" - when a member enters a session on the board they will see the "new" posts highlighted with a gold club for that session BUT ONLY that session. Once they go somewhere else and then come back then the script thinks that they have read everything the last time they were here and will only highlite the posts made between the last visit and present even if that is just a few minutes. That's why they look "all read" even though the member may not have all read them. In this case you have to go by posting times and unfamiliar topic titles.

All of this is cookies and browser related.

Here are the instructions for clearing your cookies:
For IE version 6
Here are the instructions for cookies and cache Tools > Internet Options > General > Temp Internet files - hit delete cookies and delete files.

For IE version 5
Here are the instructions for Internet Explorer 5 on Windows:
Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Click the "Start" button.
Move up to "Find" and click "Files or Folders" from the menu that appears.
In the "look in" box, type in "C:\Windows\Cookies\" (without the quotes) and press "Find Now"
After it has finished searching, go into the "Cookies" directory and highlight all files (click a file, then press CTRL+A) and delete them (press the "delete" key or SHIFT+DEL) ***** ONLY DELETE FILES FROM YOUR "COOKIES" folder/directory.
Your cookies should now be removed. Restart the computer.

Also it was mentioned by a member here colonel??? was it??? that if the privacy setting were too high then some login problems might result as well.
Java, security privacy settings etc. are found in your browser's Tools > Internet Options

Just set privacy to a normal level.

Hope this helps.

Thanks LT for your time, effort and explanation.
At least we can now put this problem to bed ( so to speak ).

I use Netscape for browsing. I'll clear out cookies and give this a try like LT suggests and let everyone know how things turn out.

Like I was saying before in another thread... ...software these days is not very good. Things like cookies and how they work, I feel, is a poor design:burnt:. Most of these silly problems like cookies are mostly because of incompetence in Miscrosoft. Boy, we all love them, don't we:no:?

George:)

Thank you for your help. For those who use Netscape, the Cookie Manager is where this same intervention is done.

For someone like me who has worked on mainframes for so long... ...there are more problems with no resolution these days which requires the user to perform some kind of house keeping... ...these silly problems because of technical reasons I am aware of, boils down to a waste of everyones time and effort. The requirement to clear cookies is the consequence of poor concepts and design:no: which everyone has to suffer with:burnt:. These programs and applications are very complex in operation and these days I find much more sloppy programming:bawl:. Windows 95 is a prime example. I could go on ranting but I won't. I will give you a hint of where better software comes from, IBM:agree:.

Regards,
George:)
