Re: Judging my predicting performance

Just as an afterthough, I will post here an evaluation on my predicting ability:

In a controlled environment, posting 16 numbers over 19 draws (I forgot about one draw) in a known 6/49 lottey, I managed to get an average of 2.15 winning numbers. Not the best performance but certainly not the worst one. I even managed to beat out karnac by a small margin. (no hard feelings, karnac???)

None at all Gilles ....in fact I loved the competition and I look forward to the next challenge, and that reminds me I should back check and see if how I would have fared using my theory with the GH program in that challenge ...I'll let you know:lol:

All right Gilles...I backchecked and if I had used my theory with the GH program I would have scored 45 with 4 bonus balls for a 2.25 average... Good for 2nd or 3rd....look out next time:lol:

Unlikely or impossible

I have to agree to some of your statements but not all of them. And to me, I am not sure you actually read what you wrote.

You say: “Although 1 2 3 4 5 6 may come out one day, it is highly unlikely to come out due to the com-petition in the system”. You are right: the odds are 13,983,815 against 1 and, as many have said, lottery is a gamble. But then, you continue with “…it will be absolutely impossible for 1 2 3 4 5 6 to come out”. I do not see the great scientific mind in action when you say highly unlikely and absolutely impossible talking about the same event within 2 phrases. It is often said that a door must be either OPEN or CLOSED but not both at the same time. Highly unlikely means a very very small possibility and absolutely impossible that there are no possibilities at all.

Just think of the odds of you and me having this discussion: your parents and mine having met each other on a given day, then enjoying themselves (I hope at least), the result being you and me, then growing up to enjoy lottery discussions, and so on, and so on. Unlikely yes but impossible no, since we are having this discussion.

I will take your reasoning for 1-2-3-4-5-6 coming out one step further with another combination: 22-27-32-37-42-47 and consider its unlikely occurrence. Let’s compare a few facts:
A - the first numbers (respectively 1 and 22): there are 1,712,304 combinations starting with a 1 and only 80,730 starting with 22
B – the delta between first and second numbers (respectively 1 and 5): again, there 1,712,304 combinations with a delta of 1 and 1,086,008 combinations with a delta of 5;
C - the delta between second and third numbers (respectively 1 and 5) … you can continue like this for a while.

Since all conditions must be met to actually get either combination (1-2-3-4-5-6 or 22-27-32-37-42-47), at the end the odds are the same, 13,983,815 against 1. But then, this is where it is absolutely impossible to say that “it will be absolutely impossible for 1 2 3 4 5 6 to come out”, it is a known fact that combination 22-27-32-37-42-47 did actually come out in Canadian Lotto 6/49 on June 23, 1990. It is even more amazing that it occurred after only 670 draws. Most likely with your worldwide knowledge of lotteries, you could give me similar examples (although I doubt you would do this – let’s stick to generalities like “I know and that is how I like it”).

So I will agree to your “HIGHLY UNLIKELY” but not to your “ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE” choice of words.

Cheer up, my friend.

PAB,
Benford's Law - while an interesting observation of real world occurance of numbers, in my opinion has no relevance in the world of lottery predictions.

Francis Isaac,
Your website has no real information without a login, and you require address and phone number to get a login - I never give out that information on-line.

CMF,
I understand the thing about URL's and was unaware of it when I initially posted my URL - I would like to note however that my website has no forums (and has a link on every page to this forum site), a simple one-way feedback mechanism, no advertisements of any kind, and the only content is my forecasts, and results of past forecasts. It is a text only web-site, currently no graphics of any kind. It's only purpose is to show my forecasts, and results so that I don't have to post them somewhere before the drawing to say I have a successful forecast - this is automatically done for me.
I see no real information here that is worthy of copyright, other than the php code that runs the forums. Any text I post anywhere belongs to me, and I can do with it as I see fit - although by posting it in a forum it also becomes part of the public domain. Not even really sure why you mentioned copyright.
I agree with your observations about sums / evens & odds, however I take them into account in a different manner in my forecasting and I do feel that the have a place there.

Irvin,
I would like to forecast for the New Zealand lottery however I am unable to find a source on-line for the results in a TEXT format. If you know of such a place, let me know so I can add it to my forecasting.

All - My thoughts on forecasting:
Everyone here seems to be mainly interested in picking a future jackpot for one of the 6/49's, I am attempting to pick winners (not necessarily the jackpot) in 67 lotteries of various formats - a somewhat larger scale.

There are no random numbers. The best that we can achieve by any method is something close to random.

Each lottery is a unique entity (based on it's parameters, draw method, and historical data) - what is true for one lottery will not necessarily be true for the next lottery. Each drawing within that lottery is a unique event, things true about the next event will not necessarily be true for ALL future events. The historical data is a series of drawings, in order to determine what numbers the next event in the series should be you must determine what trends and patterns exist and evaluate if those trends / patterns will continue or change. As a result, what I forecast for tomorrows drawing will not be the same for the drawing following that.

I think we are all in agreement that there is no way to say these 6 numbers (or howmany ever depending on your lottery) will be the numbers drawn. So we are all choosing more numbers than cannot fit on one ticket, it only makes sense to use a wheel type system - not necessarily a simple straight full wheel (it's the only cost effective way)

The only way to prove that you can predict the lottery is to win money actually playing the lottery (not necessarily hitting the jackpot) regularly. No one who is here reading all this can afford to play hundreds of $$ each drawing (if you can, I have to ask why you're here). So I have numerous systems used in my predictions, I decide if I'm going to play a given drawing, then choose one of the small systems usually from 6 to 66 tickets depending on my budget at the time, recent performances in predictions and of those systems individually.

This year, I have had systems with 5/5 tickets in 4 different lotteries (one of them in my preferred lottery - of course I played a system that day of 14 tickets, had a 4/5 winner, 2 3/5 winners, and a couple 2/5 winners for around $800). I'm now playing on their money. Right now only the results of the most recent jackpot pick are on my system - I only keep ticket details for a limited time (my database is huge as it is). Tuesday morning (had I played that same 14 ticket system) I would have won another $756. Right now I'm on a break and probably won't play again until May. Between then and the end of the year, I will consider myself successful if I hit second prize 4/5 3 more times (not playing every drawing).

My system has a long way to go before I consider it good, it will probably always be a work in progress. I am not going to claim that my system is better than anyone else's, but it is significantly different than any that I've seen or heard about - and I have had what I feel are reasonable results. I have only recently started with pick 6 lotteries, so I have a limited amount of data and have not optimized the parameters of the forecasts (no I'm not going out and getting the entire history of every lottery - I'll wait patiently for data to arrive automatically, and I don't believe that you need the entire history to make a valid forecast). What I'm really doing here is like trying to hit a moving target at 100 yards with a shotgun using buckshot - not an easy task, but I'm happy with my results so far, and am sure that I will be able to improve my results.

With all that said, I'll respond to any direct questions, but I think it's time for this old country boy (no degrees, 20+ years computer experience, and 30+ years of following mostly US lotteries until recently) to return to my normal "Lurker" state, and spend my time working on my forecasting system and other more important "life" things.

My forecasts and results are available "hassle-free" on my website, if you're interested in how I'm doing you'll find everything there. Everyone here has been pretty cool, so the best of luck in your lottery playing, number selection, and even life in general for that matter!

I'm not a hunter but I can relate ... except that I've been using a slingshot at 100 meters (we're metric, eh? ;) )

Brad,
I realize that you are "metric" and thought about that as I wrote my post, but not to worry - I won't hold that against you 8) ... I too was using a slingshot until I created my shotgun ...

Matrix,
Thanks for your feedback, your first (long) post was something I don't understand the relavence of, if you could explain I would apprecaite it - all feedback, good or bad is important to me.

Taiwan Lotteries, I would be happy to add them (in fact any lotteries I will add), but I must be able to retrieve the results from the internet in a "text" format - If you could point me in the right direction I will gladly add them to my system.

How to interpret my forecasts? My forecast is simply an ordered list, the first number is what I feel is most likely to be drawn. So if you choose to play a system using 9 numbers then you simply take the first 9 numbers from the forecast and use them in your system. If you don't have a system that you like to play then you may choose one of the systems I generate based on how many tickets or numbers you want to play for that drawing. Most of my systems are ones I've found in books, although I have a few from other sources, and have created a few using programs like CoverMaster. If this is not a good enough explanation let me know so I can clarify.

Another 5/5 Jackpot Picked (Michigan)

Oops! Fat fingers caused me to submit too soon ...

Tonight after checking I found that I picked another 5/5 jackpot - This time in Michigan's Fantasy 5 lottery (5/39), it was my 31st forecast for this lottery ... All 5 numbers were within the first 9 numbers of my forecast ... I generated 21 systems of tickets - systems summary (best ticket)

1/5 x 1
2/5 x 2
3/5 x 5
4/5 x 12
5/5 x 1

of the system with 5/5 (27 tickets) ticket summary

5/5 x 1
4/5 x 6
3/5 x 12
2/5 x 8
1/5 x 0

With this jackpot that makes 6 5/5 Jackpots this year (each in a different lottery).

Based on everyone's experience in attempting to pick winners, what do you think? Am I just getting lucky, or do I have something here?

That's my personal research paper work for Taipei Bank last year.

If you want to read them in detail, I can send a copy to you.

About the TW lotto history data, do you read mandarin?

Because they are published in mandarin on offical website, so it's

difficult to use them directly.

Hi PAB,

Let me start by saying quite frankly that each combination of six numbers does not have equal chance of occurrence. It has nothing to do with bias in the balls that goes into the machine but the way the numbers themselves are set in nature. I will prove this to you by using the list of numbers given by GillesD. Every single one of the combination GillesD gave out, has no chance of comming out as six numbers, if you select them on their own. The reason is quite simple. The combination of numbers in the Lottery system does not exist alone. They exist in a group of combinations. Let me take GillesD first example which is 1 2 3 4 5 6 (A) coming out. First of all, you are expecting 1 2 3 to come out together and that has 15,180 combinations. This combinations are then split into different sum of numbers and there are 130 sums altogether and each sum has got so many combinations. The combination of each sum start from 21 with just one combination all the way to sum 84 which has 253 combinations then to sum 150. The competition in that group is so unbelievable because you will expect the sum with the most amount of combination to have the most chance of coming out. To make things a little bit more complicated, sum 84,85,86 and 87 have the same amount of combinations. Not only has 1 2 3 4 5 6 got to compete with all this sum, it also has to deal with the fact that it is six consecutive numbers. It has no chance of coming out.

Now, lety us go to the second list which is (B), 2 11 16 31 33 41. This combination has got more chance of coming out than 1 2 3 4 5 6 because there are only 5456 combination in total with only 91 sums. The reason why this will never come out is because this combination is competing with 91 different sums and each sum has serveral different combinations. This combination has sum 134 and there are 122 possible combinations that add up to sum 134. Even if sum 134 does come out, there are 122 different combinations within that sum and only one can come out. I am happy to bet on it that this combination has no chance of ever coming out.

Now let us look at the next combination which is (C) 22 27 32 37 42 47. This combination has got just 680 combination altogether and would appear to have the best chance of the three combination so far but it has several draw back. One it is starting with such a high number that it will take several years for number 22 to come out as the first number based on its last appearance. Then, it has 43 sum and each sum has several combinations. I personally like this particular combination but I will never play it on its own without choosing other combinations with number 22 starting the group as well. The sum for this combination is sum 207 and there are only 31 combinations possible for that sum. This combination is good because it is affordable as you can play the whole sum to give you maximum chance but on its own, it has no chance. Now, let us look at combination (D) which is 25 26 32 39 40 42. This combination has exactly the same amount of combination as the last one. It also has 680 combinations and both combination (C) and (D) appear to have exactly equal chance of occurrence but (C) is highly more likely than (D) because number 22 starting the group has got more combinations than number 25 starting the group. Other than that, they would have behave the same with equal chance of occurrence. By the way, combination (D) have sum 204 which has 31 combinations as well, Combination (D) may have come out in the UK Lottery and this only happen by pure luck and not chance because it would have been very difficult to determined that this combination would come out. If you were playing this combination on its own, there is no way you can say with absolute certainty that it will come out at some point within the next 10 years, when it did. Now, let us look at combination (E) which is 3 8 14 21 33 35. This combination does not have any chance of coming out because, there are 6545 combinations in this group in total but there are 97 possible sum. This combination has sum 114 which has 136 possible combinations with sum 114 and you have only chosen one combination. Even if the right sum were to come out, that makes it 1 in 136 chance of the right combination coming out and that is just not going to happen for this combination to come out. Now let us look at combination (F) which is 13 15 36 42 44 45. Of all the combinations so far, this combination is the best because it only has 286 combinations in the group in total with just 31 sums. This combination has sum 195 and there are only 17 possible combination in this group with sum 195. I will be tempted to play this one because it has the most chance but I will not play it on its own, I will play the whole 17 combinations and I will give you all the possible 17 combinations here. They are:

D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6
13 15 36 40 43 48
13 15 36 42 43 46
13 15 36 41 44 46
13 15 36 40 45 46
13 15 36 41 43 47
13 15 36 40 44 47
13 15 36 39 45 47
13 15 36 42 44 45
13 15 36 41 42 48
13 15 36 37 45 49
13 15 36 39 44 48
13 15 36 38 45 48
13 15 36 37 46 48
13 15 36 40 42 49
13 15 36 39 43 49
13 15 36 38 44 49
13 15 36 38 46 47

The last combination combination (G) which is 1 7 25 30 41 45 has combinations 2024 with sum 149. There are 64 possible sum in this group of family of numbers and each have several combinations of their own and this combination has sum 149 and the combination with sum 149 is 64 possible combinations. I suppose that 64 is not bad but it has too many combinations stil I hope that this has been educational. If any one of the combinations above other than (D) comes out anywhere in the World, please do let me know.

You got it. I will check them out .

Before that, could you tell us what reasons to support you to pick these 44 lines? I will appreciate!

Hi Matrix,

I picked this 44 lines based on the highest occurring number in position 1, I then decided to pick 48 and 49 as the two most occurring number in position 6. I know that number 1 in position 1 has 1,712,304 followed by number 2 in position 1 which is 1,533,939, followed by number 3 in position 1 which is 1,370,754. By picking 1 2 and 3 in a row, I expect those three numbers to come out more often. I then pick number 49 in position 6 because it has exactly the same amount of combination with number 1 and 48 because it has exactly the same amount of combination as number 2. I expect this combination to win on every lines when it does win. You will also noticed that every possible number in the 6/49 lotto has been included in position 4. They are basically all there because you have 1 2 and 3 and then 4 to 47 are captured in position 4 then 48 and 49 in position 5 and 6. This is my reasoning for choosing those combinations. I always like to set my combinations of numbers so that when there is a win, it usually occur on every line. Have fun and let me know what you think.

Hi Matrix,

Thanks for that. I await the rest of your results. Have you got a program that helps you to do this because I would not mind having a program like that. I would love to run my combinations against past data in my database but the program that I have can only calculate up to 20 numbers and that is it. If you can give me the address of where to buy the program, I would be extremely grateful.

I am pleased you have decided to look at my proposed combinations and I will answer your comments as time permits, hoping to give members here an opportunity to see both sides of the fence. Let’s start with my combination (C) 22 27 32 37 42 47 and your comments.

You say: “One it is starting with such a high number that it will take several years for number 22 to come out as the first number based on its last appearance.” Yes, there are only 80,730 possible combinations out of the 13,983,816 or 0.58%. So far, it occurred 14 times in the 2,218 draws or 0.63%, fairly normal I would say. The last time it happened was in May 2000 in draw #1705. With a theorical percentage of 0.58%, we can expect (and that’s what we got on average since Lotto 6/49 started) about 1such winning combination every two years. Twice it happened in fairly near draws (#59/88 and also 916/951). It has now been nearly 5 years, so it might be coming soon and I can not agree with your statement: “One it is starting with such a high number that it will take several years for number 22 to come out as the first number based on its last appearance”.

One general comment appears quite appropriate here. The winning combination for draw #1748 in October 2000 was 38-43-44-45-46-47: a more unlikely combination with an even higher number (38) and 5 consecutive numbers. Yet it happened. So you will say: most likely the jackpot was not won. But if I can remember well, I think there were 4 wining tickets. How about this.

For my combination, you also say: “I will never play it on its own” and a little later “but on its own, it has no chance”. To tell you the truth, I sure would have liked to bet on these numbers because on June 23, 1990, this was the winning combination. And like for each of the other 2,217 winning combinations, I will say it had a small chance (1 out of 13,983,816) and on that day, it was the day to choose it.

So I would say you struck out on this one and I am one up on you. I know, I know, it was not very kind of me to put a past winning combination in my choices but since I knew you would say it had no chances…
