Why do Lotteries bring out the WORST in people?

I guess i should post this here instead....

I would like to know what is it about the lottery that brings out the WORST in people.

People who don't give a damn about you suddenly become your best friend.

Relatives who would be too ashamed to ask for a loan, suddenly feel entitled to a portion of the winnings.

Why is it if you make $1 Million on a real estate deal or the stock market, no one bothers you and asks for money...everyone is happy for you and think you worked hard and deserve it...but if you get a $1 Million in the lotto suddenly you owe everyone a living!...and you are a rich loser who will be disowned if you don't.....


Why does the lottery make people who DIDN'T WIN greedly, selfish, jerks?

i would tell everyone to screw off 1 million isnt even enough to earn you(and your better half) to earn a living,(depending on where you live 80,000 a year interest at average 8 %. thats not a hell of a lot ( depending on where you live. i live in edmonton alberta and that would let me live exactly the way i do now. with my income and my gf s income i may also have to get a part time job.there would be no glamourous life with 1 million. just same old, but no work...so how do you go about not working and at the same time not spend more than usual. anyway i know im a bit oiff topic, but i always believed the saying that money IS the root of all evil. i have an aunt who was a very good aunt, nice and a noirmal perso...until my grandfather died. tried to take my brother and i for a ride (for abiut 5000$) split that by two and its not worth the money, but we thought it was worth the pricipal of the whole thing and respect for familly(especially the wishes of past on ones). so we took her to court and for all i know we will never talk to that aunt again......

money...the root of ALL evil.

Actually it is the LOVE OF MONEY that is the root of all evil...not money itself.

I brought up this question b/c we had this hypothetical discussion the other day...what we would do if we won $1M...and our FIL/MIL said we should pay off their mortgage and my mom said we should pay off HER mortgage also....she went so far as to say we should split the winnings 3 ways with my sibs so that's its fair and equal...

If we did all of the above, i think we'd be left with approx 50K to keep for ourselves.

We told everyone that we would give 10% away to everyone COMBINED...
$25K each to inlaws and parents and 2 siblings....then we would pay off OUR mortgage, car loans, student loans, credit cards and credit lines and go on a nice vacation. That would leave us with
$500K to invest for our retirement and children's university. We'd still have to keep our jobs but would live debt free! Yeah!

When my mom got wind of it she told me that i was being "cheap" and "selfish"....my FIL was upset that we wouldn't buy him a big $70K boat...

ok heres how i thought of it when the canada 649 was art 22 million. 8% interest a year is 1 760 000. so i thought if we win this and collect the interest, i would live off the 760 000 a year and give the remaning 1 000 000 a year away to family (starting from oldest to youngest) only direct family, father (or stepfather in my case) mother, siblings grandparents. but thats it. sure i would help from time to time on other things, but i would hope( and even possibly demand) that the only money they use is the interest. 1 million is 80 000 a year. i might consider giving the couples in my family 2 million( 1 million again in order of oldest to youngest after the first round) cause 80 000 a year wont get you much of a life pretty soon(depending where you live); and then when i die i would like to pass down the remainder to my family and still only let them have access to the interest. that way i know that the family is taken care of and the basis for it will always be there and not blown on 5 or 10 years of partying or something. for the rest of how i feel you can find the discussion(what would you do if you won? started by tallman?) but if you won only one million ( i know its sad to say only 1 million), but when i was a kid i thought that was enough to buy the planet. today it will get you 80000$ a year interest( barely enough to cover both you and your spouses salary) again(depending where you live) i would keep that all for myself and maybe try to help out( using part of the interest) if it was really needed( maybe i would have to work a couple of months that year) lol

This quote is from a powerball winner on the same show but different series."Money changes more people around you than it actually does you".And when you stop to think about,it is definetly true and a big contributor as to why people act like leaches in such scenerios.He also said that he doesnt mind helping people(lie paying 60gs for an operation,or leaving a 2000 tip for a minimum wage worker),but that they always start off with a list of problems and a sum of 100 or 200 thousand lol.His mailbox was full of strangers requests for financial assistance,and you know what,after I watched that,I can understand why a lot of lottery winners go into isolation,its because their neighbours force them to.My 2 cents.

Yeah, agreed. On one of those documentaries, one of the winners (I think it was Jack Whitaker!) received over 50,000 letters addressed to him as

Lotto Winner,
(Town), W. Virginia.

On another board people have said go ahead and hold a press conference and get it over with. I think a press conference is just the start of this kind of thing.

I'm not sure what country you live in factor but I think here in Ontario,Canada they need your permission to print your story in the paper or to show your face on tv.They have the right to show the winners on the official website but if I won,I would claim the prize with a lawyer.Like why are you gonna expose some lottery winners and conceal the identity of others?Its not right and John Whittakers story is just tragic.I personally would feel paranoid about the safety of my family.You know what,I think here is some curse that comes along with winning but hey,I wouldnt mind dealing with it lol.
