Lotteries
Since 1975, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLGC) lotteries, charity casinos, slots-at-racetracks, and commercial casinos have generated more than $19 billion for the benefit of the Province of Ontario. Gaming proceeds support Ontario's hospitals, amateur sport, recreational and cultural activities, communities, provincial priority programs such as health care and education, and local and provincial charities and non-profit organizations through the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Here's how every dollar spent on our lottery games was used during our 2002/03 business year:
51.4% went to prizes for winners. In 2002/03, a total of $1.13 billion was awarded in cash prizes.
31.5% was generated for the Province of Ontario which is responsible for the allocation of gaming proceeds. In 2002/03, OLGC lotteries generated $695.5 million for the province.
7.0% was paid in retailer commissions and bonuses. There are more than 10,000 lottery retailers in Ontario, from convenience store chains and mall kiosks to independent grocery and convenience store operators. A total of $155 million was returned to the economy through commissions and bonuses to retailers and bingo hall operators in 2002/03.
7.9% towards expenses.
2.3% was paid to the Government of Canada for GST, and for remittances under an agreement which stipulates that the Government of Canada will not participate in the sale of lottery tickets.
Please note: The figures above are based on the OLGC's Financial Statements for the 2002/2003 Fiscal year.
