What happened yesterday?

That didn't feel like a planned outage LT, I actually got a Trojan when I tried to read a post here

Is everything O.K. now?

Yes Brad u r correct. We were under attack again. A silly person attacked and got the "admin" member - a membership used for the controls of the board. They then locked member "LT" out and must have attempted to steal the membership database and cause as much harm to our community as possible.

We are now back ... until next time.

re a trojan? ... could you please explain as a bad file cannot be got fro reading a post etc. - it has to be downloaded.

Just before the shut down yesterday I noticed that Beaker had noticed som unusuak activity but that thread was lost in the restore process.

I loged on O.K. but as soon as I clicked the link to the first post (I think it was in Anything Goes) the BB page disappeared and Norton AV flashed a warning re: infected with Trojan.Progent. It was unable to repair so I found the offending file and manually deleted it from my Temp. Internet Files. It seemed to point to the BB: ... \Content.IE5\X0G7XPKP\lotto649[1].html.

After that I was unable to link to the BB again. I'm no expert on this but if it'll help I can pull the NAV log for info, times, etc.

Guests 'quoting' posts

LT,

my post to you referred to Guests being able to 'quote' posts in threads.

The only way that I know of to view threads as a guest is to click the forum or search for a particular item. The results of the search will display threads to the guest.

I just wondered how a guest could then 'quote' a post within that thread since they can't see the post

For what it's worth LT - not sure of the intricacies of these search engine bots :notme:

Prevent Robots from using bandwidth

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a nice simple way to stop the majority of robots spidering files that you don't want to or they shouldn't need to.

Place the following code in robots.txt and upload it to your domain root so when you go to http://forums.site.com/robots.txt you get this file

Code:
User-agent: *
Disallow: attachment.php
Disallow: avatar.php
Disallow: editpost.php
Disallow: member.php
Disallow: member2.php
Disallow: misc.php
Disallow: moderator.php
Disallow: newreply.php
Disallow: newthread.php
Disallow: online.php
Disallow: poll.php
Disallow: postings.php
Disallow: printthread.php
Disallow: private.php
Disallow: private2.php
Disallow: report.php
Disallow: search.php
Disallow: sendtofriend.php
Disallow: threadrate.php
Disallow: usercp.php
Disallow: /admin/
Disallow: /images/
Disallow: /mod/
This will stop them from trying to access files that won't have anything intresting to spider. Also stops them getting images which should save on bandwidth when you have lots of spiders on your forums.

Note: The majority of spiders check for these not all do.

Thanks everyone .. you have all been helpful and supportive.

www.lotto649.ws should now work again.

Good workaround charles2 for when the direct door was not hooked to the forums :agree2:

I experienced the same trouble about a week ago....Norton went on ...All got red showing that warning stuff....
Had a lot of trouble getting rid of it...
But I kind of knew before that that something wrong was going on ....Or that something like that was about to happen...If you read between the lines you will spot it in many of my posts lately....
:agree:

If you 'kinda' knew why didn't you 'kinda' give LT a heads up? Could have prevented a lot of trouble.

Beaker:

I saw that too... ...looks like a possible loop-hole somewhere:notme:. It could be someone clicking on quote and then getting an error message.

George:)

re: Are you talking to me???

Yes, that part is clear. If someone sees trouble brewing it would make sense to warn others. Advising to read between the lines after the fact isn't clear, it seems pointless.

He!...He!...So you still are reading my pointless posts....So when you've said that you didn't want to have nothing to do with any of my posts was pointless too...Wasn't it???
I stop here ...It is pointless to continue here...

Beaker:

You collected this one:
Guest Quoting Post in Thread 6/49 Discussion For April 21, 2004 04:22 PM.

As you can see, there is nothing from a Guest in that thread. Logic tells me the Guest clicked Quote, was then stopped followed by a message saying you need to be a member. Does this make sense?

Regards,
George:)

Good to be back. A huge number of sites were subjected to DOS (Denial Of Service) attacks yesterday and today.

As far as protecting this site from further intrusions, perhaps this could be of help (specifically, point #3).
