Does anybody know anything about dotcom toolbar? When I logged on to my computer this morning, immediately I had about 15 popups (which I normally don't get at all) and then a message saying, "thank you for downloading dotcom toolbar" I never downloaded anything and then the next thing I know my homepage changes to something else. And now I have this new toolbar that I don't want.

Download and install this Free Antivirus Program

http://www.free-av.com/

It will never slow down your system.

Hi Nick,

I am considering using AntiVir to replace my soon to expire Norton AV, but when I tried to download it this came up:

"You can load a Windows Socket 2 update from Microsoft and install it. You can find this file on the Microsoft Web site at:..."
This is an update for Win95. I have Win XPpro, can you comment on that?

There doesn't seem to be a separate download for XP, I did not get too far with support because it's mainly written in German.

TIA

Maggie,

I have been using Spybot for a while now and it's a very good program. To answer your earlier Q mine is a diff problem than yours.

Cheers

Thanks, Brad.

Another question if anyone knows, with WindowsXP you can do a system restore to put your computer back to the way it was, say 2 days ago, would I be able to do that or should I go the other route and uninstall this thing?

Maggie,

restore may not help, but Spybot will. Do a scan first ('Check for Problems') to isolate the spyware and then get rid of it using 'Fix selected problems'.
You'll find the download easy to install too, check out this 'How To' link.

Cheers

There's a few of those things running rampant around the internet.. some pages you go to have activex controls and other malicious scripts that can run simply by visiting a website..

I got one of these awhile ago (a different one though). I use ad-aware 6 to remove my spyware, but it didn't fix the one I got..

Turns out there was a much easier way, cus the one i got change my homepage to it's designated home page. By scrolling to the bottom of that page and clicking on help, and at the bottom of the help page there was a link to a removal program to download which worked fine..

If you disable the java package (that is useless anyway for most of it...)or install a patch for it that is within explorer and windows...you become unreachable by most of the kinds that Snides just talked about... :agree:

1). Follow this link and get Kerio Firewall
http://www.medigo.ru/index.php?p=3443&c=1#comments

2). Follow this link for AntiVir

http://softik.net/article427.html

3) Use SpyBot 1.3

Now with these 3 programs and a good Proxy you
shall be 99% protected

Free Browser Security Test

For those not overly skilled (like me) in Browser Security setup, this link provides a great way to improve your security settings.
It will check, advise and basically walk you through the whole thing. See: Jason's Toolbox

It's good for Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

Other useful links are: How did I get infected? and Security Help Tools

credit goes to: Tech Support Guy
(I know we're not supposed to post links to other Forums, but this one is not lotto related ;) )

Just saw your post Nick, thanks :agree2:

Just a word on the subject of spyware detection. I have both Adaware and Spybot installed on my computer since on many occasions Adaware has missed spyware and Spybot has caught it, and also viceversa on many occasions. What I'm saying is don't trust 1 or the other , use them
together. You also have to search your control panel(Add or remove programs) to see if you have a program you don't recognize. These are the ones that have a tendency to change your search engine and home pages. Look here when you suddenly get a toolbar you didn't ask for.

A good site to check your security is Gibson Research, Shields Up, which will tell you how your systems fare against intrusions. http://www.grc.com/;)

well i usually run them, when iu start seeing weird stuff hapening. like my startpage being reset for no apparent reason, or slowing down of the net, and search popups appearing.

as you noted, somethign weird was happening, time to run the programs, and clean things up.

Karnac,

How often do you run your Spybot and Ad-aware? Weekly?

Beaker is a believer also .....run it daily or more if you're doing a lot of surfing...and also remember to empty your Temporary Internet files and cookies at the same time for optimum operation. Allow 10 mb storage space in the Temporary Internet file folder so you don't store too many cookies between purges. When things start acting strange spyware is usually the reason.....or a virus:D
