First 6/49 ticket nets them $10M After 2 weeks of planning, couple finally collects
By SANDY NAIMAN, TORONTO SUN
Anne Gray and husband Michael Psaki bought their first Lotto 6/49 ticket earlier this month.
"It will be our last," Gray said yesterday as the couple picked up their quarter share of the Aug. 12 jackpot of $43.2-million -- the second largest in Canadian history.
They said they buy a Super 7 ticket every Friday "but don't always look them up right away," Psaki said.
The two insurance claims workers resigned from their jobs yesterday morning before picking up $10,805,586.
Though eight Dollarama employees collected their share of the winnings two weeks ago, Gray, 46, and Psaki, 54, waited until yesterday because they wanted to "follow the right steps and get everything in order," Psaki said. "We're careful, cautious and thoughtful -- but it's been a long two weeks."
Trying hard to remain cool and calm, Gray couldn't stop smiling as she described the moment they realized all their numbers matched.
"This is surreal. We're still in shock and it's not over yet," she said.
Happy with their home and car, the childless couple who married eight years ago plan to travel, starting in Munich with the tail end of Oktoberfest -- "something I've always wanted to do," Gray said.
Another recent winner was Antonio Arrojado. For 27 years, since he moved to Cambridge from Portugal, the construction worker has faithfully bought tickets twice a week.
Last Friday was no different -- until he checked his past 6/49 tickets and saw that his Aug. 19 ticket was a winner.
"I kept looking at the numbers over and over again," he said, standing beside his wife, Maria, at the Dundas St. OLG office, where they picked up their $9.1-million prize. "I didn't believe it for an hour."
Arrojado said it's too early to know how his jackpot will change his life but he plans to retire and visit Portugal.
He also plans to shop -- a Cadillac SUV for his 23-year-old daughter, a Corvette for his 18-year-old son and something, he doesn't know what, for himself.
I hope one of this board wins the big one and share there stories!
