a skydiver guy I knew had a "close but no cigar" worst case scenario recently...main chute did not deploy, reserve did but it tangled. sad...Rick was a military paratrooper...ironic that he got FUBAR stateside, rather than on some nighttime HALO covert-op somewhere.

Once ya jump and an accident occurs, your fault or not and equiptment failure or for some other reason- you are considered a jinx! The man is lucky to be alive. Paratroops are a funny breed of soldier, seems that they fall back on superstition for the darnedest things and one of them is that they are very leery of being near you on the ground after any type of foulup and most times find a reason not to jump with you, too! So, the military finds other jobs that will suit their needs as well. (Psychology?) This is first hand experience talking!

yup I'm sure that is how it goes about the jinx thing. anyway, he had been skydivin for ages & ages, so damn well had the routine down...he just had the misfortune of a day in which everything went wrong, and he bought the farm...hell of a way to go.

*Blitzed, My first jump was a doozie. My first seargent was the first one out the door and the first to get on the ground---He--RomanCandled--We did a low level quick jump to keep VCs from knowing where we were or how many of us were there. All I care to say about the event is that he probably scaired crap out of everything and everyone on the ground. I really don't have much to say if anything about my tours in that godawlful place.
