Lottery winnings to be taxed!

Believe it or not, the idiotic Liberal government is planning to tax lottery winnings. Read Liberal budget:

The Liberal government's bid to take Ontario's pulse on fiscal policy culminated Tuesday in a report that endorses running a deficit, implementing user fees and taxing lottery winnings - a report critics angrily denounced as a waste of taxpayer dollars.
:
The report endorsed raising ''discretionary'' taxes on alcohol, tobacco and luxury items like boats and ''large cars,'' taxing large lottery and gambling windfalls and increasing the cost of hunting and fishing licences and vanity licence plates.

The $17 billion of gambling revenue that the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation have collected for the Province of Ontario is obviously a tax. Anti-gambling critics even describe lotteries as a tax on the math-illiterate or "stupidity tax." It would be stupid for the government to double-tax lottery winners who already paid the tax by buying a ticket.

That's the beauty of government for you! And it really doesn't matter who's in the big chair. One party liberally takes all it wants, the other conservatively gives what it doesn't want.

Won't happen.

Lottery taxes are extremely regressive and as you have so eloquently pointed out  only the cerebrially challeged among us play them.

No Liberal government would ever do it. It would be similar to charging the homeless in tent cities property taxes.

Re Tax on tax

Didn't Sask. try some stunt with a tax on winnings several years ago?
I seem to remember them doing something and revenues went in the toilet when it was boycotted....or maybe it's deja vu .

Only natural for the Lyin Liberals to try to gouge lottery winners of large jackpots......aren't there supposed to be more 10 & 25 million pots under the new format?

How about writing off your losing tickets as in the US?....

Why do I get this feeling we don't know where all those millions of dollars in tickets sales go to......... in the wake of Adscam is LottoScam very far behind....

Just a few thoughts......

I mentioned this earlier - we won't see 10 - 25 million $ jackpots in that lotto  despite what they say.

Look at S7. People win that lotto weekly, at 4+ times the odds of 6/49. Even if ticket sales are reduced by 10-25% I still think people will hit.

We seem to be a lucky bunch in this country.

We'll see :notme:

The current 6/49 jackpot minimums are $2, 5, 10 then $12 million. With the price doubling, the new sequence will be something like $5, 10, 20, then $25 million. Fewer tickets wil be bought for the intial $5 million draws so there will be more rollovers to $10 million.

As for Super 7, most of the initial $2.5 million jackpots rollover. It sometimes takes four or more weeks before the jackpot is won.
