Black Widow Spiders Found in Grapes 10/13/04
The Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors says extra precautions are being taken after some black widow spiders turned up in shipments of grapes from California at two grocery stores in St. John's and others in the Maritimes. Jeanne Cruikshank says the incidents happened during the first week of October and the clerks weren't injured. She says people unpacking produce now wear gloves and there are increased visual inspections. Cruikshank says customers can also take precautions to ensure their safety. The grapes should be washed vigorously.
Cruikshank says spider bites can be very painful but are rarely deadly. She says there have been more such incidents because fewer pesticides are being used on the crop in California.
