Atlantic Lottery to offer online tickets

HALIFAX - The Atlantic Lottery Corporation will be the first government-run gaming organization in Canada to sell tickets over the internet.

Six games, including Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Super 7, will be available on the Atlantic lottery website early next month.

But first the site will try to verify that shoppers are over 18 and come from the region.

Lara Wood, marketing manager at the corporation, says it's trying to reach a new market, not squeeze out retailers.

"Because this is a very specific type of person who wants to do this, we don't expect the impact to be very great," she said.

Wood says there are more than 30 lottery companies around the world who have gone online.

Some gambling critics worry the trend will increase problem gambling. But the Atlantic Lottery Corporation says the website will limit how much a person can spend.

It looks like through this new medium we'll finally be able to join western and atlantic Canada in having the ability to pick all the lines in Super-7. Very nice! Maybe the Ontario Lottery Gaming Corporation will wake up and smell the coffee once they see their Super-7 revenue take a dive.

Thanks for the heads up, Karnac.

There appears to be much more in the works than just buying their lottery tickets online: http://online.casinocity.com/news/news.cfm?ArticleId=48530

I wonder if the servers will be based on an offshore island, just like all the other online casinos, so that they don't break their own laws. :/

I wonder what this will do to life in the Maritimes. "After the tourist season ends things tend to go downward, but now there's online gambling with an outfit I trust, The Atlantic Lottery Corporation. I feel safer sending money to the ALC than to some offshore place Pa never heard of. Ma says online Keno is more fun than Bingo and you don't have to travel in winter." Yayyyy A generation of boomers coming of retirement age, now with something else to pass the time.
Incidently, I mean no offence, as I have maritime roots.

I don't think we're going to have to wait long for the Olgc to follow the ALC's lead on this . The way the 649 is floundering, some gimmick is on the way. Last night's sales were the second lowest since June 2.
