Any Potential Doom III Players

As some of you might know, the most anticipated Shoot 'em up game will be unleashed on Aug 5....From the Video clip I have seen, it looks scary and gory...
But the most important thing is playing online which will be available of course...
So I am wondering if there is any players (Doom addicts) around..

I believe my machine won't be able to host a server as it's only 1.7 GHZ and old Video card...GF3
I might be able to play single player if I am lucky...

Back in 1997 when the game Quake was popular, I used to go Net cafe and play hours along with other ppl....It was fun of course.
Nowadays wife telling me I am old for these games haha. I tell her neh I am still young..Age means squat to me
:agree:

I know many of you don't care but there must be someone there playing these games.

I'm still waiting for HL2!!

Other than that the only game that I like online is counterstrike!

My prefered games are those long strategy, realtime strategy or strategy with role playing king of hames!
Long live Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic!

Thanks for the info...
Wasn't looking exactly for Ladder stuff.....Just a server to hop in and play with others just for fun like good old quake days..
As long as it's around Canada and USA...

Yea I agree HLII looks fantastic as well :agree2:
Was never into strategic games but I know there are many many ppl follow these games...

So Thorn is there any new line of CPU coming up soon ?

Dual-core cpu's are comming soon.
But the next thing are intel's 64bits desktop processors!

That is good so I can perhaps buy a fast machine like AMD3200 later on when price goes down due to upcoming ones :agree:

I never liked CS due to sniping campers haha....But I know it has a huge following around the world..

I hear there is 3rd party working on RTWS part II..
Then ID Software will be working on a new game!!

Did u like UT2004 ?
I only have the demo and it's ok...Perhaps when I upgrade then I might buy it..

Well Korax,
In my opinion (by just doing a quick price check) you can get a great system for around US$790:

Let's see:
CPU: AMD XP3000+ - 150
MB: MSI K7N2 - 95
MEM: 2*256 DDR400 - 94
HD: WD800JB 80GB - 65
CASE: Simple with 400W PSU - 50
VIDEO: 9600XT - 138
DVD: DVD/CDRW combo - 41
Floppy - 11
Monitor: CRT 17" - 95
Speakers: 5.1 - 55

If you are upgrading you can further cut on the price by using previous components; if you don't plan on playing powerfull 3D games or intensive computions you can cut the prices of CPU and video card by say half and arrive to a price of say US$650

About the games.
I agree that the big problem with CounterStrike are the cheaters... I can live with campers, but not cheaters!
Don't recall what RTWS means? Real Time World Simulation ;)?
Unfortunately I don't have a machine powerfull enough to play any recent games! So UT2004 is out of my league, I did play UT2002(3) a bit... but I still prefer CS!

Anyway, just did a quick search and I think that this 3 guides from Anandtech pretty much sum up what you can do....

1) High End - US$3615 - Summary here...
2) Mid Range - US$1028 - Summary here...
3) Entry Level - US$546 - Summary here...

So I would say my above system is in between the Mid-Range and Entry Level!

Another good option is just to get an SFF barebore and add cpu, memory, disk, optical drive and video card(if you require it)! This will run at about US$850!

RTCW it's Return To Castle Wolfenstein....Based on Quake 3 engine...

As for upgrade, I am looking for powerful machine cause within next year or so more games will emerge and I want that one to last for a long time...
So gotta get powerful VD card as well....
HD has to be way more than 80 GB
RAM I want 2*512 hahahaha

So at the end I would wait a bit for dual core tech then by X-mas or b4 that I should strike

Gotta get something similar to $2099 but later on so maybe it might drop in prize in 5 months or less.....

I asume those are CA$2099, so about US$1595!
For that price you can put togheter a slightly better system than that today!
If you are planning on going for something like this get a decent case with a huge power supply, at least 400W!

I just checked the price for a system with those specs with better case, including good 5.1 speakers for US$1500!

I must say that if you lower your specs a bit on the video card you can save US$200 and go for the much better A64 3500+ (newcastle core, Socket 939)!

Just one thing I forgot to mention... PCI express!
The pc is about to change architecture again, this time we are moving from pci to pci express; which means that all hardware will not be usuable in future motherboards!
So if anyone is thinking of buying something expensive today, they have to take this into consideration as well!

Good that u reminded me of PCI express..I completely forgot about it...

When will it be available ?

TO THORNC

Some good news about Doom III requirements !!
ID Software ppl said they are still playing with 1.5 Machine and GF4 with decent play (not the best but decent)...A year ago that would have been impossible!!

Also they say NVIDIA cards have the edge over aTI...ATI seem to have small problems..

Carmack, the lead programmer said future vd drivers will improve things as well :agree2:

It's starting to be available now! The new Intel 9xx chipsets already support it so it shouldn't take long untill everyone else uses it!
I took a quick look at Tomshardware and it seems that Motherboard makers are still including PCI slots on some models (no AGP) so some stuff will still be available!

In my particular case, I will either by a good decent system now (probably AMD XP based) and hold on to it for some years; or I will get a good decent laptop with the Centrino2 technology and a decent video card and hold to that!

Decisions, decisions.....

NEED TO UPGRADE

Doom III runs a bit slow on my machine and can't enjoy the exquisite graphics they talk about....I didn't get involved in any fight and this is where it will show how slow it is....
I am stuck now and have to figure out a way...

I guess might have to just delete til I get a machine later on :(

The best advice is to wait on it for a while! It won't run away and in about 4 months you can get the now top of the line stuff at an acceptable price and better yet more mature!

And from the benchmarks I have seen, you will need at least a P4-3000 (prescott) or an AMD64 and a top end card to play the game!
It's way to much money to pay for a game, better to wait!!
