13 6/49 2nd prize winners and no jackpot winner

How often has this happened before? A really large number (relatively) of 2nd prize winners - 13, per the OLGC site - and no jackpot winner. I realize that the winning numbers were on the low side, with 4 including bonus in 1st decade, but still. Any comments?

My comment: the second prize in lottery is quite desirable... :party2:

It does happen occasionally, this year alone:

Jan14 - 13x $29K, JP $2M not won
Jun02 - 9x $37K, JP $4.7M not won

Mar27 - 14x $38K, this draw had the most 2nd prize wins in '04 so far, but the JP was won - 2x $2.5M

There were 5 others of 10, 11 and 12 splits of 2nd prize, with the JP won.

I'd say most of the 5+ were without 30. There are many players using a pattern when filling numbers played... ...07 and 43 are located in the corners (at least in Ontario, other regions have their own but probably the same). Those low numbers are typical of some who pick a tight bunch which is not so likely to hit like that for a big win. Of course there is the Quick Pick too.

Yesterday, as a matter of fact, I saw a guy playing 2 lines... ...first one was all in the first 2 columns, second line was mostly in the last 2 columns... ...sometime this dumb luck pattern pays off... ...from time to time, 3 and 4 hitters will turn up from these:eek:, not much more:no:.

George:)

In my opinion, these are quite good strategies. If all six numbers are drawn from those lines, which happens sometimes, a good hit is quite reasonable…Usually, draws with more than one consecutive, three repeats, with six low, high, odd, or even numbers have at least one if not more than one JP winners…. I would say that some people know how to make a good…. trap?

TomTom:

If you are a casual player, 1 line per draw, sure, it might get you something:agree:... ...don't expect to win big soon... ...on the other hand, accidents do happen... ...this kind of play is just like a Quick Pick... ...its a trap which some players use.

George:)

Call me paranoid  if you will but, this up and coming 6/49 $29 million jackpot just looks almost too good on the corporation.... especially after sales were initially falling. I just have to wonder, (like Sheba) if...
They were becoming desperate and now, this is exactly what they were predicting and hoping for - big jackpots with lots of media coverage to encourage sales. How lucky can that be for the lottery corp??
I guess my point is, even taking into consideration the odds for 2nd prize vs 1st prize, I wonder if once in a while the lotteries are not rigged for marketing purposes, although I know that's a very unpopular idea on on this board....
I guess the 2nd and other prizes worthwhile windfall though, and maybe this is good argument for why best not to try for the jackpot but multiple smaller prizes. :mad2:
Sorry maybe this point/question should have been put in anything goes and does not belong in Q & A.

Could be because its the summer time so some really good players are not playing.

the comment above by mirage about lotteries rigged for marketing purposes...

...conversations i have had in the past with administrative types at the BCLC concerning their portrayal of "chances" to win the BC/49 lottery being 1:6,000,000 rather than the 1:13 million odds of the 6/49 lottery (tickets for the BC/49 can be had at two for the price of the 6/49 lottery) elicited the response, on several occasions, that such advertising and efforts were made to promote the BC/49 lottery, and done so with the best marketing tools they could muster...that came as no surprise...
