Hey Guys,

Ontario Lottery Group introduced a new rule which you should be aware of.

If you play the Lotto Advance in a group and someone in the group isn't a resident of Ontario, you forfeit your prize.

I work for a global company, so last year we had two Americans in the group. This year, I had to tell them to take a hike because of this new rule. (Boy will they be mad if we win.)

I asked if only their share would be forfeited. They said no, the entire group with forfeit the prize if there is even 1 non-Ontario resident in the group.

So, you could win the Jackpot and OLG keeps the money. Be careful!

. How do I claim winnings if I am a resident of the United States?

OLG 's lottery games are designed to be enjoyed by adult residents of Ontario. Occasionally, residents from other jurisdictions play and win OLG's lottery games, and OLG treats everyone fairly. The same claiming procedures described in the "How do I claim a prize?" answer above apply, subject to any U.S. postal regulations. OLG cannot mail cheques into the U.S. In cases where U.S. winners are required to receive a cheque for their winnings, they must pick up their cheque in person at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto

Get your friends or family together and play LOTTO 6/49 through LOTTO ADVANCE as a group. When filling out the subscription form, just check Group Play and fill in your group's numbers. All subscribers, including members of a group, must be residents of Ontario and 18 years of age or older.

and,

LOTTO ADVANCE subscriptions is available to residents of Ontario only. The sale of a subscription to individuals under the age of 18 is prohibited, and prizes related to such subscriptions cannot be paid. In the event of group play, all group members must be residents of Ontario and 18 years of age or older; otherwise prizes related to such subscriptions cannot be paid. The payee hereby certifies that he/she is 18 years of age or older. Cheques for prizes less than $1,000 will be sent by mail. If the amount is $1,000 or more, winners will be contacted by OLG.

That is the most ridiculous rule I have ever heard. OLG has their money, why should they care if a member from the group doesn't live in Ontario? Especially when non-Ontario residents can still buy a regular 649 ticket and win.

Agreed! :agree:

I'm thinking it must be some kinda inter-provincial political turf war because, as you say, anyone can buy a 6/49 ticket and win.

There is probably some legal issue involved they dont want to get tangled up in.

Might be inter provincial, or it may even be because of the laws the americans are enforcing on americans living in canada. I remember reading in the news last year by law anyone born in the usa whether they live there or not anymore, according to law, they must pay 20 percent of their estate to the american govt. They sent letters last year saying they had a deadline to pay it last year. They never enforced it before, but with money being tight in the us govt, they sent legal letters to all american born citizens living in other countries, that they are legally bound to pay the us govt 20 percent of their estate, normally its at time if death if you live in the usa, but because they are out of country living elsewhere, they wanted it last year by a certain deadline. Also all financial information and law enforcement information is disclosed or shared with the americans after harper signed the security agreement.
Some lady from ontario i guess she was depressed so she attempted suicide but didnt succeed. But there was a police report so when she recovered, she decided to take a trip to the united states. And was stopped at the border and they gave her a hard time about her suicide history and whether she was mentally stable. So she is sueing the police and canadian govt for privacy infringement.
My guess is, its some legal issue they dont want to get tangled up in.
