Try this Sheba ....

MailWasher is a freeware prog that screens mails at the server level, before a virus can get on your PC. It can also bounce spam back to originators as if your addy no longer existed, filter your mail, etc.

I've been using it for some time now with reasonable success, meaning that I have not picked up any bugs from mail. Have not had much luck in curbing spam, it looks like once my addy got on one spammer list it probably got 'sold' and 'resold' and the spam just seems to 'breed' itself  (that's partly my IP's fault too cuz I think they have very 'loose' spam filters).

The link above is for the 2.0.40 version which is limited to 1 mail account only and can't be used with hotmail. If someone has a link to the 2.0.28 beta version it was more versatile in that respect.

It may link to a forum, so if tha's a problem I'll pull it.

Cheers

I am also using Mailwasher, however I don't use the bounce feature. I read somewhere by an expert on the software that by bouncing the emails back , more are sent to the address since they are aware that someone replied to it. I believe I read this on the AVG antivirus forum. I blacklist the address, and avoid the bounce.

I read something about 'bouncing' not working as you said ... but then I read another article where that was disputed (probably written by a spammer :D). I'm not an expert so I don't know :notme:, but I did notice many spams are 'unbouncable' anyway, them spammers are a crafty bunch in keeping a leg-up on us I guess.

One thing I would caution against is using your main (private) mail addy on eBay, that's one of the best (worst?) ways of getting on a spam list. I use my web-based mail for that now ... live and eventually learn :dizzy:

Spam

Hi Sheba,

I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express for the past couple of months. It has an "intuitive" spam filter, which dumps spam in a Junk folder where you can check it or trash it. It has worked well so far.
