"Edmonton police chief fired after controversy
CTV.ca News Staff

Edmonton's police chief was fired Tuesday night following the public uproar over a controversial drunk-driving sting involving a newspaper columnist and the city's police commission chair.

.........................

The decision comes after reports claiming that police targeted Ignasiak and Edmonton Sun columnist Kerry Diotte in a drunk-driving stake-out outside a downtown bar in November.

In radio transcripts released by a local newspaper, police appear to try to tailor the sting operation to cover up the fact they had spotter officers in the bar.

The officers make disparaging remarks about Diotte's column, clothes and physical appearance and discuss previous surveillance on his house.

"I think the guy who gets this target will never have to pay for a drink as long as he lives," one unidentified officer reportedly says.

After Diotte left the bar in a taxi, one officer was heard saying, "Well, I think we will be able to tag (Diotte) on another day, another time."

"When something like this happens, you start thinking anything is possible," Diotte told CTV's Canada AM.

When asked if he fears for his safety, he said he was more vigilant these days.

Diotte said that he brought the matter to light because he feels that journalists and Canadian public should "be able to speak out and feel that they are free of retribution."
