Cod Fishery in Quebec 1/11/05 (Dale Fry)

A fisheries activist in this province says a recreational food fishery for cod has recently opened in Quebec. Jim Morgan says fisherman have built ice huts on the St. Lawrence River and have been busy catching fish. Morgan says the fishery is not being run by DFO, but the Quebec government. Morgan says fisherman are allowed to catch four hundred to five hundred tonnes of fish before the fishery closes at the end of March

As solid as the Rock ...

Newfoundlanders have been the butt of negative comments from politicians and others for some time now, mostly concerning their willingness to work ...

But if one goes back to Johny Cabot's days some 500 yrs ago, they'll find that he had a hard time getting ashore for all the fish in the sea. Once on land his progress was hampered by the thick forests and vegetation. He had an abundance of wildlife to contend with also.

Now with all the fish gone, trees cut down and animals shot, one can't help to admire the ppl's efficiency in doing so ... they got their work done before anyone else and there's nothing left to do!!

I have met 3 Newfoundlanders here in Ont. All have left the Rock for jobs.
They are the nicest people and work harder than anyone I know.

Can't speak to those that are still there  but that province has alot of wealth - minerals and offshore oil. Given time, they should prosper.

Don't forget their hydro-electric resources, too bad the original deal locked in unrealistically low rates to the developer/power buyer for eons.

(Jennifer Tulk) VOCM News...

Months of negotiations have paid off for Danny Williams. The premier reached a multi-billion dollar deal with the prime minister last night after a marathon bargaining session. Williams says under the newly formed Atlantic Accord deal, Newfoundland and Labrador will get two billion dollars over eight years. Premier Williams says reaching a deal of this magnitude was a team effort, and he says the support of the province was vital.
