Yesterday I found out that my fave lotto terminal was closed down, permanently!!

It was a 'mom & pop' venture run by a retired couple who had a little kiosk for as long as I can remember, in this small town of about 6-7 thousand ppl, well at least 12 yrs anyway.

All they did was sell lotto tickets of all kinds (6/49, S7, Daily3, Keno, scratchies, etc.) nothing else ... and it had been a profitable setup, obviously, since they kept it going ... until now that is.

Their reason for closing?? Drop in sales of CN49 over the last year since the Corp increased the price to $2 per ticket!!

Apparently the much lower sales of the one lottery alone was enough to make their little operation not viable.

Pathetic even. Even tho lotto corp increased price for 6/49, these sml bus owners didn't see any of the upped take per ticket sold?

Not sure Mirage, don't know what their commission was, will have to ask the couple next time I see them. This being a small town it's bound to happen fairly soon.

Actually I did not even find out about their closure directly from them, it was the store owner from whom they were renting floor space that told me why they closed, he worked the kiosk part-time for the couple so his info was first hand. I only talked to him in passing, did not go into details.

Rather than speculate I'll just take his word for now, although my feeling is it was a double whammy here in small-town BC on account of 2 lotteries doubling ticket costs simultaneously ....

I think commission is between 1 - 5 %....
Very sad indeed.
Today I missed 4/6 in CN49 cause I only had BC49 tickets.
Can't buy both...

It's less than 3% I think, but they also get 1% of the big winners sold at their kiosk

After a bit of digging I came up with 6.5% avg. commission on BC lotto ticket sales. Apparently they use the "industry standard" (whatever that means ... country wide maybe?) and it includes bonuses paid out to vendors.

I can only guess what the term 'bonus' implies, it could be tied to wins or ticket quota. But the 6.5% is a provincial avg. so individual vendors could get more or less than that depending on their performance.

This 6.5% avg was down slightly from 2004 when it was 6.7% ... all this info comes from BCLC's annual report btw.

Haven't seen my fave ex-vendors yet to confirm why they closed but another aspect to consider is the fact that BCLC began to sell lotto tickets on-line recently. This is probably not good news to ticket vendors anywhere ...

When you buy a ticket at a kiosk it looks like a ticket with a verification bar-code at the bottom. What exactly do you get if you purchase a ticket on-line?

Short answer ... I don't know.

Here's a link to BCLC's PlayNow setup but after reading through it I could not find how they confirm the purchase online. There was a brief mention of a ticket being issued but it's not clear if it's paper or 'electronic'. Would have to register to see how they do it ... maybe someone else has a firsthand experience they could relate.

So that is your copy..Print it out ...

Yeah? You're thinking of moving to Beautiful BC? It's a provincial thingy only I think, Mirage, may hafta wait till OLGC has a similar setup ... or do they already?

Would love to move to beautiful BC, the climate is so much nicer, for the most part ...there's not the deep Freeeezzze of the Dead of (Brrrhhh...) Winter..., the landscape is breathtaking, the lifestyle is healthier, etc. When I think of Ontario I think of it being basically one, long, strung-out corridor of asphalt between Windsor and to east of Toronto with pretty boring scenery on either side.
I understand that in most places real estate in BC is more expensive (with exception of Toronto where the price of housing is insane.) Vancouver might be similarly priced for real estate though maybe not quite as bad...
I don't think OLGC has on-line lotto sales.
