Jury Duty

Has anyone here ever been chosen for jury duty? I thought a person could only be called for it once. I did sit on a jury about 8 years ago, but, thought that would be the end of it. Today I get home from work and there's a letter for me saying I could be considered. Anybody know anything about the one time only rule or is that not the way it is?

According to the Juries Act, a person is eligible to serve on jury duty once every three years.

There is a process to be followed in order to be excused from serving as a member of a jury in cases of undue hardship. The process is to write to or appear before the presiding justice, where you were summoned to, who will then make a determination based on the request before him or her.

Maggie, I was summoned for jury duty twice, but never selected.
You can be summoned once a year, however, if selected to serve on a jury, you can only serve every two years.
They normally send out 300 summon's weekly, and you must attend, or when they do roll call, if you are absent, they will look for you.
Your name is entered with a number in a drum, depending on how many jury's they are looking for, they draw names in 10, or 20 lots.
If your name is called you stand in front of the crown prosecuter and the defense attorney, either of them can either accept you as a juror, or challenge.
If selected, it is then that if you have a valid reason, that you cannot serve, you best let the judge know your reason, he, and he alone decides. If you wish to know more, you can email me.

...I'm sure there are some sure fire ways to avoid being selected to serve, I'm interested to know if my joking smart-ass remark would be one of those you have in mind:eek:...

Hey, there you are Peter, hope yu didn't get rained out too badly.

I don't mind serving on jury duty again if selected, I was only a little surprised that I could be called a second time for it. The pay was lousy, though.. I think I got some little pittance that didn't amount to a hill of beans. Heck, wasn't even enough to pay for lunch. :p:

It's normally $10 a day plus transportation cost, and that is calculated as bus fair, should the trial exceed 30 days, it goes up to $40 a day.
They will normally tell you the expected duration, having once had the aspirations of becoming a lawyer, I found it all very interesting.
Depending upon your employer he may very well pay you your salary, but as I said, that depends on your employer.

The best excuse I saw was a young mother bringing her crying baby with her, she went right up to the judge, even before selections, and told him she would have to bring the baby cause she has no one to care for the infant, and as a single mother she could'nt afford the costs.

thanks, maggie, for indicating that you would not mind going..(again, mmm).. to participate in the citizenship process...fortunately, there never is an end to that.....i sometimes am excited and possibly disgusted when individuals, sometimes with a loud mouth, attempt with whatever dubious means at their disposal to opt out of such duties as these (i doubt they are doing themselves or anyone a favour by relegating themselves to the back corners)...many today speak of " rights " and " privileges," --- the " right " or " privilege " to-do- this-or-that, is a common homily often discussed --- yet when one has the opportunity to actually participate (albeit, in this case called-upon rather than initiating- the -process), many i hear of do their uttermost to remain at a distance, to attempt to sever responsibility, all the while complaining loudly that they should bear the burden of citizenship, and complaining even more loudly when those responsibilities and duties are not returned to them (wwhhaaattt..??????as favours??!!??)......kudos to you, maggie.

p.s. as you have been, one of my family has been chosen twice within a recent period....on different days, we all helped her pack her own lunch.....the rest was up to her......................

nothing so altruistic as serving your country, maggie...(in that context, perhaps more like feathering your own nest..lol)....or, at the very basic stuff part...it's the community in which you live, and, yes, you are in charge.....

..... ....darn that cuban rum...flight was too long getting
back and now it's warm.....have to light a cigar waiting for it too cool down a bit.........he says, back in his own canadian nest..........

.....thanks again
