One thing is cygwin, an unix like environment over windows(to keep the explanation simple)
You can also run a different shell other than explorer, Geoshell for example! See more here!
Then there are plenty of utilities to trace and help understand what your windows machine is doing...look at sysinternals NT/2K/XP page for some good ones!
