Friend bought you a winning lottery ticket.

If your friend bought you a lottery ticket for your birthday, and it won $1 million.

How much should you give him?

How much would you give him?

i usually say ill give half of a jackpot, as here 2nd prize of $1m is unheard of.
ive heard %10, touted. really as a giver i expect nothing of any prize unless there is overwhelming wealth involved. then id like a cut.
prob %10 for $1M

I have had this conversation many times over the years with friends and family. As savagegoose says, if you are the giver you should not expect anything from any prize. That said however, it is down to the winner and their relationship with you that is important. Winning a large amount of money does unfortunately change people and in some cases greed overwhelmes everything. They change their attitude towards you, regardless of whether you have been there for them through thick and thin and always would be, money has a very mysterious affect on some people.
If you did win the big one, would you tell anyone?
If you did tell, you would potentially be everybody's best friend and they would expect a free ride for as long as the money lasted, is that true family or friends?
There again, if you decided not to tell anyone what would you do without bringing attention to yourself?
Most people would upgrade their home, buy a car or two and all of a sudden take a few more than the one annual holiday.
I don't mean to appear to be negative on this but people who inherit or win a great deal of money do change in the majority, unfortunately this is a fact of life. I have had first hand experience of this more than once.
I would like to think that my family and friends are exactly that, my family and friends, and would hope that they would be pleased for me, and I personally would help them if needed without being critised or judged.
Sorry for being cynical.

Edit: This thread could open up a whole can of worms!

I do not think I would give cash...instead treat friend to tag along with me to wander Asia for a month for example as a courtesy gift in exchange.

kinda lame if family & friends would demand money...like they have a license to be financially irresponsible.

especially if it is a smallish prize...upwards of 50% snatched for taxes, and some prizes are not lump sum...so a win for me might only partially make up for being under-employed working for peanuts:rolling:

cheers!

yeah its sad times but $1M isnt set for life. im beginning to think the old lotto ticket inst such a great idea for a present. i recall over 10 years ago i would habd out around 15 of them for xmas to people i knew. and honestly hope they would win, because i liked them.
now besides, family im lucky to find 2 people i can say that for. and certainly would never buy a ticket for , or give one to . maybe its just me. or as i get older the circle of people i like has gotten smaller.

back to the 1 mill thing, here i can get %6 in a bank account, that would be 60k , not a bad earner. in usa, hell, wtf would you do? isnt interest like %1 or 2%? 10 or 20k on 1 mill! maybe buy a franchise thats actually selling stuff? or moving some where?

It is a crying shame that we have to think about things like this when all we are trying to do is achieve enough money to be able to have a more relaxed and stress free life, but unfortunately, as I have said before this is a fact of life.
