Was wondering if anyone knows about free-to-air receivers & satellite and how they relatively work.

Would appreciate if someone can sum this up for me as I'm thinking of getting one......

hehe, it seems that I know a bit about everything!

I had a FTA receiver in my previous house(lost it when moved), it basically works fine provided you have a good antenna/lnb set!

There are packages for all tastes as in everything... mine was digital.
I used a cheap decoder without any special add in ports, the thing supported DiSEqC so I had a two head lnb, that allowed me to receive two satellites (Astra and HotBird) and in those there are a bunch of what they call transcievers, each transcievers transmit a number of channels. You identify the transcievers by frequency, bit rate and some other stuff.
LyngSat mantains a good list of these.

There are of course a bunch of details, so I advice you to do a good web search and you will find all the information you need!
My main advice is get a good decent decoder/receiver with CAM support! Those will allow you to adapt to any paid provider you may want ;)

Thanks ThornC for that bit of information. Did you use the big sat (c-band) dish or the new pizza-size ones? How much does it go for this days...the decoders ???

Yes, it sure does belong to another forum however there's none presently in ours ....

:agree:

I used an 80cm dish, got a perfectly good reception also.

THe full set (receiver/decoder + dish + 2 head universal lnb) costed something like CAD$195!
But the receiver was very slow and the lnb stopped when it over heated!

I would say that from what I have seen around on the web a good decent set will cost you around CAD$400...
Don't forget to save something for the CAMs ;)

is this getting the sat signal without paying the sat companies. My friends used to do this and 5 years ago they said was ok, that the sat co only changed the code every 6 months to a year, then steadily got worse, every month, every week, then 2 times a week, then daily now sometimes hourly??????

i wouldn't want to go to my local sat guy to ask for the new code every hour????
