Double Up to Win

When you break lotto draws down into individual decades (D0=1-9, D1=10-19, D2=20-29, D3=30-39, D4=40-49) you will notice that most of the time there will be at least two numbers in one decade and sometimes two or even three decades will have two numbers. For example, the most recent ON49 draw was 6-23-24-35-36-46. We can see that the Twenties Decade (D2) produced 2 hits and the Thirties Decade (D3) also had two of the winning numbers.

Just counting the winning numbers by decade, this draw would follow the pattern 1-0-2-2-1 or sorted, 22110, that is one decade (D1) missed, two decades (D0 & D4) had one hit and two decades (D2 & D3) had two hits. In fact, this is the most common pattern to hit and occurs in 37.4% of all combinations.

Here are all the decade distribution patterns and the percentage of combinations that each represents:
21111 13.2%
22110 37.4%
31110 15.1%
32100 21.2%
22200 6.2%
41100 4.3%
42000 1.3%
33000 0.9%
51000 0.3%

As you can see, 79.3% of all combinations have at least one occurrence of 2 hits within a single decade.

So, when you put together your combinations, it would be smart to put two numbers in one or two of the decades. As you can see :look: the patterns 22110 and 32100 represent almost 60% of the total.

Which decade should you choose for the double? Two numbers in one decade occurs about 26% of the time (slightly less for D0). So we would expect 1 double every 4 draws or 5 occurrences in 20 draws. However, the appearance of doubles tends to be streaky, with as few as zero doubles in 20 draws and as many as 12. Almost 60% of the instances of doubles happen soon after a previous occurrence, with 27% happening in the next game, 19% skipping one game and 16% skipping two games. 90% of doubles happen within a skip of 7 games. So, you might choose a decade that has recently had a double, or one that has not hit double in a month or more.

Good luck!
