A happy couple from Stephenville received a cheque for one million dollars from the Atlantic Lottery Corporation in Corner Brook today. Brad and Carla Dicesare had the winning numbers in Saturday's Match 49 draw. Brad is originally from Corner Brook and Carla is from the Codroy Valley. They bought the ticket while attending Carla's younger sister's wedding and say they went crazy when they found out.

Jailed British rapist wins $17M in lottery
Last Updated Thu, 12 Aug 2004 09:28:19 EDT
LONDON - A jailed rapist's lottery windfall has the British government looking for ways to keep felons from reaping such rewards while behind bars.

Iorworth Hoare, who is serving a life term for the most recent of a series of attacks on women, won the equivalent of about $17 million in Britain's national lottery.

British Home Secretary David Blunkett said on Thursday that proposed legislation would require convicts in Hoare's situation, or who are otherwise wealthy, to contribute to a compensation fund for victims of crime.

Hoare has been in prison since 1989 for trying to rape a 60-year-old woman in a park. He had served a series of jail terms beginning in 1973 for a number of sex attacks.

The 51-year-old had been considered a low-security detainee, and was on day release from his low-security prison when he won the lottery.

Now that he has money, authorities have moved him to a high-security prison and refused him leave. Prison officials said it was for his safety.

The rapist's good fortune has angered many, and raises the possibility that his victims could sue him for a piece of his prize.

SHERWOOD PARK, ALTA. - One of the three Canadians that shared a recent $32.5 million lottery win says he'll honour a 20-year-old promise and hand over $1 million to his best friend.

Barry Funk and his wife Patty Gau held one of three winning tickets for Friday's Super 7 lotto. The Sherwood Park, Alta., couple's share came to $10.8 million.

Funk says that 20 years ago, he and his friend Michael Hawryshko agreed that if either won the lottery, they would give the other $1 million.

While claiming the prize on Tuesday, Funk said he and his wife would give Hawryshko the money.

"It's just an extension of the friendship," said Funk.

The two other winning tickets were sold in Quebec and Ontario.

Just adding a little more to this story...

Outrage Over Lottery Win 8/12/04 (VOCM News)
Many in Britain are angry after learning a convicted rapist won seven million pounds, which is roughly 17 million Canadian dollars, in the national lottery. The man bought the ticket while on a weekend day release. David Blunkett, Britain's home secretary, says plans are now in the works that should prevent similar situations in the future. Blunkett says the proposed legislation will force wealthy criminals and those who win lotteries to make contributions to a benefit fund for crime victims.
